Richard Adelman was born and raised in the Bronx. He has a B.S. (1961) from Syracuse University, and a J.D. (1964), and an LL.M(1972) in Labor Law from New York University School of Law. AfterLaw School, he was a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Gus J. Solomonin Portland, Oregon, and then a Teaching Fellow at Stanford Law School, before working at the Appellate Court Branch of the NLRB in Washington, D.C., for two years. From July 1968, until January 1977, Dick practiced labor law in NYC, working primarily for Ted Kheel. Dick started arbitrating labor disputes in 1969, while in private practice, and in 1991, he became a full-time labor arbitrator. Dick was admitted to the National Academy of Arbitrators in 1993, has served as the Chair of the New York Region, and currently serves on the Board of Governors of the Academy.
During the 40+ years, Dick has been an arbitrator, he has been involved in over 5000 disputes over a wide range of issues in virtually every industry, and in both the public and private sectors, and he has issued some 2500 opinions. For over 20 years, Dick was the impartial umpire in the newspaper industry for the Mailers Union and Newspaper Deliverers Union, and for 12 years he has been the impartial chairman for contract disputes for Local 100, TWU and the New York City Transit Authority. He has served on many arbitration panels, and he currently serves on panels for Local 804, IBT and UPS; ILA and New York Shipping Ass’n: Local 827, IBEW and Verizon; and Local 340, UNITEHERE and Brooks Brothers; among others.
